From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a wide array of personalities, and a gripping narrative including divine entities, evil spirits, and malevolent powers growing in power within the city.
Warning: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season follow below.
The Warrior Group Introduced
The third episode ended with a dramatic pause and revealed the initial group of characters who will separate from the primary party to embark on their independent quest, separate from the additional parties.
This warrior group consists of the determined fighter (played by Travis), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander (Sam), and Kattigan (Robbie Daymond).
The Reason for Division
With 13 cast members, it was clear from the outset that having everyone at one table would be unworkable.
Hence, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, connecting the characters’ stories before branching into three separate parties: Warriors, Schemers, and Questers.
The Nature of the Soldiers Table
According to the DM, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who enjoy a classically intense fight-heavy narrative style where peaceful solutions are scarce.
Initially, figures such as the squeamish cleric the cleric might look out of place, but the actions of the third episode make it clear why these five characters are ideally matched for the combat party.
Motivations for Departure
For one thing, the group knows exactly where to head next after a violent initial meeting with the antagonists.
An old friend of Thjazi Fang—whose death kicked off the narrative’s action—exploited the foes for his selfish purposes, breaking into the secret base, striking the rogue, and swiping all the enchanted items to dispose of.
The traitor then paid off his liabilities and ran away to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, north of the city, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.
Individual Reasons
Secondly, each adventurer has a personal reason to leave the city the urban setting:
- The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, desires retribution.
- The knowledgeable figure has experience in the region and cautions that it is a nasty place.
- The strong character and The healer, having disobeyed his family’s wishes to kill the target and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
- Yet, their position as prominent individuals in House Halovar could assist the group enter areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Furthermore, The fighter pledged a life debt to Wicander for his rescue and will now go with him wherever.
Wanted and Hunted
In addition, all of them are wanted by the rulers that rule the setting for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city too risky:
- The rogue and Kattigan are known criminals.
- The warrior and The cleric turned against the influential house and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
- The fighter is wanted dead by the clan.
This means them few options but to head to the northern region in search of the traitor.
