Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
